Autumn Advisory for Farmers
Advice for farmers on preventative measures to keep livestock healthy and thriving over the Autumn and Winter months.
Suckler Pneumonia Prevention
To help prevent pneumonia we recommend
- Imuresp RP or Bovilis IBR – “up the nose vaccination”
- Hexasol LA or Alamycin LA Injection
- Levacide Injection for lungworm and to stimulate the immune system
Try to keep treated animals outside for at least 1 week after injections and then house. It is very important to ensure that there is adequate ventilation in the house.
Parasite Control
Young Stock
Dose for Fluke, worms and lice 2 weeks after housing.
Suckler Cows
- Dose for Fluke and Lice.
- Use Trodax injection in December
- Thin cows may benefit from a Worm dose and Copper injection as well
Dairy Cows
- Should only need to be dosed for Fluke and Lice.
- Use Zanil (3 day milk withholding) as they calve or Fasinex when they dry off.
Sheep
- Dose wintered sheep for Fluke, use Fasinex in October, December and February.
- Dose for Worms as ewes lamb.
- Housed sheep should be dosed for Fluke a few days after housing
Calf Care
Scour Prevention
- Suckler and dairy cows should be injected with Rotavac Corona at least 1 month before calving to ensure proper protection for calves when there born.
- Calves should receive adequate colostrum, at least 2 litres within the 1st 6 hours after birth.
- Calve cows in clean pens.
New born calves navels should be dipped in strong iodine to prevent navel ill.
