Spring Turnout Advisory for Farmers

A few careful measures taken at the time animals are turned out to grass in Spring can prevent problems building up over the grazing season.

Grass Tetany

Beware of Tetany! Administration of 2 bullets per cow should protect cows over 4-6 weeks, getting them past the danger period.

Blackleg Vaccination

Blackleg is a disease caused by the bacteria clostridium Chauvoei This soil-borne organism gets into the bloodstream from the gut and multiplies in the muscle tissue. The toxin released causes sudden death - quite ofter sudden death is the first symptom seen.

Vaccinate all cattle from 3 months to 2 years of age - previously unvaccinated cattle need 2 injections given 4 weeks apart.

Worming

  • Cattle not wormed at housing should be dosed prior to turnout to prevent pasture contamination.
  • Cattle wormed at housing do not need dosing until 1 month after turnout.

Recommended Wormers

  •  Levacide Injection: Use every three weeks while out on grass
  • Noromectin Injection or Pour on: Use very 5 weeks while out at grass
